Goats to Work! Carter Bank's Innovative Approach to Land Management

Posted on: September 6, 2024

In a world where environmental sustainability is more important than ever, businesses across the globe are searching for eco-friendly solutions to everyday problems. Carter Bank has recently demonstrated a remarkable commitment to eco-consciousness and innovation.

By employing a herd of goats from Goatbusters, a Charlottesville-based company, to clear nearly five acres of overgrown land behind their corporate headquarters, Beaver Creek, Carter Bank is setting a new standard for environmental responsibility in the banking sector.

The Challenge: Overgrown Land and Environmental Concerns

Located in Martinsville, VA, Beaver Creek is a historic home on 26 acres that had encountered a growing problem: an area of land had become densely overgrown, posing not just a visual nuisance but also a potential hazard as it became a hiding spot for wildlife nearing the bank's buildings.

Traditional landscaping solutions, such as bush hogging, were not only costly but also environmentally damaging.

Grazing on Ideas: A Sustainable Solution is Found

Carter Bank's Senior Vice President and Director of Facilities, Olivia Karavatakis, along with the maintenance manager, Mike Gordon, brainstormed alternative, sustainable solutions to this challenge.

The decision to hire a herd of goats for the job was as innovative as it was environmentally friendly. Over the course of a month, these natural lawnmowers worked their magic on the overgrown vegetation, saving the bank thousands of dollars in landscaping costs and, more importantly, minimizing its carbon footprint.

The Benefits of Going Green with Goats

The benefits of employing goats for land clearing are numerous, as Carter Bank discovered. Not only do goats clear the land effectively, eating everything in sight up to about six feet high, but they also do so with minimal environmental impact.

According to Jace Goodling, owner of Goatbusters, a single goat can consume five to nine percent of its body weight in wet vegetation a day, making them efficient workers who leave behind a virtually zero carbon footprint.

Additionally, this method of land management helps prolong the time until vegetation regrowth, thanks to the goats' grazing and trampling habits. This not only contributes to the bank's environmental goals but also offers a cost-effective solution to land management.

The Future of Eco-Friendly Practices at Carter Bank

Carter Bank associates and the Martinsville community have met this initiative with enthusiasm.

Dubbed as having an "agro-tainment" factor by some, the sight of goats hard at work has undoubtedly brought a unique charm to the corporate environment. Looking forward, Carter Bank is already exploring future opportunities to employ goats for land management, signaling a continued commitment to innovative, eco-friendly solutions.

Kid-ing Around No More: Serious Takeaways from Goat-Led Land Management

Carter Bank's inventive approach to clearing overgrown land not only solved a practical problem in an environmentally friendly manner but also set an inspiring example for businesses everywhere.

As companies increasingly seek sustainable practices, Carter Bank's success with goats highlights the importance and feasibility of thinking outside the box—or in this case, inside the pen.
